A SURVEY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF TELEVISION IN REPORTING HERDSMEN AND BANDITS CRISES IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT: This study examined  the role of Television in reporting herdsmen and bandit crises using Channel Television as a case study. The study adopted the survey research design and simple random sampling was used to select the respondent. A total of 80 responses were validated from staffs of Channels Television. Data was presented and analyzed using frequency table and percentage. Social responsibility and Individual difference theory was incorporated while reviewing related literature. Findings from the study revealed that the way the television media  frame and report terrorism, and banditry  crises can shape people’s mind and condition the way the public view and responds to the sect’s attacks.Choices of words, pictures and the language of the reporters and presenters on television is pivotal while reporting crises, thus there is need to take precaution. The study therefore recommends that television reporters and other media practitioners  should ensure they give accurate representation of the causes of a crises, and the situation in a crises area to help ensure that the right and most useful type of humanitarian aid are provided by both governments and non-state actors to victims of crises.
